Dear artists,

The Urban Institute for Contemporary Arts (UICA) would like to thank you for submitting your artwork for our Beacons: An Exhibition of Luminous Art. We greatly appreciate your participation in an opportunity that received excellent submissions from all over the world. Unfortunately, after much deliberation, your submission was not selected for exhibition. Thank you for your participation in the process.

And here’s your entry fee back? Right? No? Damn.

Rejection is part of the whole art thing- This I know. It takes a while to get started- this I also know. Keeping the fee just feels like a kick in the pants (“we don’t want you, just your monies! MUAHA”)

Still waiting to hear back on another juried show, the Drawing Center, as well as a few free shows in the Short North. And I fully realize I might not get a single thing hung outside of my living room. But if this is the universe’s way of saying I should relegate art to the status of ‘hobby’ the universe is sorely mistaken. This is when I shake a turnip and swear to never go hungry again.

Tara! Tara!

  1. Don’t give up chickedee! Keep applying, yes you’re going to get rejected a 100 times, but out of 100 you’re going to get accepted by one or two (and those one or two gigs will open doors for you, believe me).
